In 1870, a quarter of the population in Butte, German Gulch, and Rocker were Chinese. Many worked the gold claims while others worked in the laundries and served as cooks. By the late 1880s, the Chinese settled in the Chinatown we recognize today on South Main Street with joss houses, noodle parlors, laundries, and living quarters. You can still see Butte’s Chinatown today or may recognize buildings such as the Pekin Noodle Parlor or Mai Wah Society.
