SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch - John Conlan - The Ties That Bind: Ireland and Butte Gaelic Leagues 1893 to 1916
DESCRIPTION:John Conlan is a retired Montana educator currently serving on the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives Board of Directors.  He also hosts a Celtic/Folk Music Program and Butte Irish History series on Butte Community Radio Station KBMF.  He has traveled extensively in Ireland\, holds dual citizenship with Ireland\, and is an independent researcher of Butte Irish organizations during the early 1900s and their ties to Ireland. \nThis presentation will explore the founding of Ireland’s Gaelic League by Douglas Hyde and Eoin MacNeill in 1893\, an organization committed to reestablishing an Irish identity by teaching traditional Irish culture\, arts\, sports and Irish industries\, a necessary first step in obtaining Irish independence from England.  The presentation is also an overview of the Irish Gaelic League’s evolution\, accomplishments\, challenges and its need to establish Branches in America\, specifically Butte\, Montana.  The program will highlight Gaelic League Founder Douglas Hyde’s 1906 visit to and reception in Butte\, Montana\, the establishment of the Butte Gaelic League (First American Branch) and Butte’s role in aiding the Irish Gaelic League and the Irish independence movement. \nThe Brown Bag presentation will begin at noon on Wednesday\, August 13th\, 2025\, and will last about an hour. All are welcome! \nMINE is an exhibition inspired by the Upper Clark Fork ecosystems\, featuring artists Eric Jensen\, Lane Chapman\, and Manette Bradford. Artists Jensen and Chapman completed their residencies in partnership with the Clark Fork Coalition\, sharing studio space at the Cottonwood Field Station\, which fostered close collaboration and creative exchange. Manette Bradford held her residency at the Hungry Hill Art Center in Butte\, Montana—a location rich with mining heritage that continues to shape the region’s identity. \nThe exhibition will be on display through October 22\, 2025\, at the Archives\, located at 17 W. Quartz Street.\n________________________________________\nAbout the Artists\nManette Bradford\nManette Rene Bradford (b. 1978\, St. Paul\, MN) was raised in a family of visual artists. This early exposure to art fostered her understanding of craftsmanship and the creative process\, establishing a lifelong relationship with her own practice. She earned a BFA in 2001 from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.\nIn 2022\, she was awarded the Montana Art Gallery Directors Association Exhibition Sponsorship for Unsettled Lands\, which will tour Montana from 2024–2026\, with exhibitions at the Montana Museum of Art and Culture\, Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art\, C.M. Russell Museum\, Hockaday Museum of Art\, Schoolhouse History and Art Center\, and MonDak Heritage Center. Bradford has also exhibited in both solo and group shows in San Francisco and Chicago.\nShe was featured in an episode of Resounds: Arts and Culture on the High Plains\, which aired on May 22\, 2023. DESCRIPTION:The Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives’ Brown Bag Lunch Series welcomes Brenda Wahler to present about James Ben Ali Haggin and his business operations with Marcus Daly. \nJames Ben Ali Haggin allegedly handed Marcus Daly his checkbook with every blank check signed and said\, “draw and keep drawing.”  Haggin’s fortune\, built over 30 years of struggle\, gave him compassion for a young and struggling Daly.  His checkbook funded the Anaconda smelter and kept the company afloat through price wars\, attempts to corner the copper market\, fires\, sabotage and mine disasters.  Haggin and Daly were also bonded closely through their love of racehorses and between them created a turf empire that still influences modern horse racing. \nThe Brown Bag presentation will begin at noon on Wednesday\, September 10th\, 2025\, and will last about an hour. DESCRIPTION:Open AIR’s place-based Artist-in-Residence program connects artists from across disciplines with culturally\, historically\, and ecologically significant locations through partnerships across the state. From remote wilderness to historic communities\, artists engage deeply with place\, environment\, and people. \nThis Fall\, four Open AIR artists are in residence in Butte from September 29 – November 2\, 2025: Olivia Berkey\, Megan Karls\, Aubrey Edwards\, and Laurie Robins. During this special Brown Bag presentation\, each will share their work\, creative process\, and experiences engaging with the Butte community. \nAbout the Artists \nOlivia Berkey – Artist-In-Residence at Hungry Hill \nOlivia Berkey is an artist working in ceramics\, performance\, and choreography. Her dances\, often solo in practice and presentation\, are conceived of as an imagined duet with unseen and sometimes inanimate partners: the dreamt presence of other bodies\, mountains\, rocks\, desert fields\, herself in duplicate. Her ceramic work\, too\, investigates the relationship between body and earth\, human and geologic time. Drawing from her experience working in museum and gallery archives\, she is ever-exploring archiving the ephemeral. She holds a BA in Dance and Art History from Bard College (2020)\, where she received awards for her work in both arts scholarship and performance. Born and raised in North Carolina\, she was first exposed to the region’s rich history of woodfired ceramics at age eighteen. Upon graduation from Bard\, she moved to Taos\, New Mexico\, to apprentice with local woodfire artist Logan Wannamaker. In Taos\, she has remained—digging\, kiln building\, walking\, dancing. She can also be heard hosting a biweekly radio show on KNCE Taos. She has performed at the American Dance Festival (NC) and the National Arts Festival (South Africa) and premiered her choreography at Groundswell Series (NY) and the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts (NY). Her ceramic work has been represented at galleries and art markets around northern New Mexico\, and she was a recent ceramic Artist-in-Residence with Arquetopia Foundation in Puebla\, Mexico. \nAubrey Edwards – Artist-in-Residence at Clark Chateau\nAubrey is a visual artist\, collaborative anthropologist\, educator\, storyteller\, and memory worker with heartstrings tied to New Orleans and presently running wild in Wyoming. Her socially engaged practice spans the academic\, creative\, applied\, and public spheres\, exploring intersections of culture\, history\, and community.She has a deep love for collaborative storytelling practices that unearth buried labor narratives of the west\, celebrating the folks who built the places we call home. She is presently earning her PhD in Public Humanities at the University of Wyoming. \nTess Fahlgren – Artist-in-Residence at Clark Chatteu\nTess Fahlgren is a graduate of the University of Minnesota MFA program. Her work has appeared in Montana Quarterly\, Joyland\, Blue Mesa Review\, and elsewhere. She writes from her rural Montana hometown\, where her nonprofit just donated a skatepark to the city. \nRichard Opper – Artist-in-Residence at Clark Chatteu\nPainting is healing. To observe a scene for its colors\, values\, and shapes is to see things in a new way. It helps strip away the judgements\, preconceived notions\, or biases I may want to project onto it. Painting requires me to see the subject for what it is rather than for what I might expect it to be. In that sense\, it’s a way to get me closer to the truth and to observe more deeply the beauty that surrounds me – beauty I might have otherwise missed. \nHe has been an artist in residence at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (Dublin) and the South London Gallery (London)\, which culminated in a solo exhibition and publication. Other recent presentations of work include Transmediale (DE)\, New Wight Biennial (US)\, Temple Bar Gallery (IE)\, and a radio broadcast on KBMF Butte Montana. \nThe Brown Bag presentation will begin at noon on Wednesday\, October 8th\, 2025\, and will last about an hour. DESCRIPTION:The American Protective Association was a nation-wide anti-Catholic group that achieved political and social prominence in Butte in the mid-1890s. With a large Irish Catholic population in the city\, APA activities fueled a full-scale riot in the streets of Butte on July 4th\, 1894. As the 2024 Carrie Johnson Fellow\, Jeff Guay spent countless hours in the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives researching the APA riots of 1894. His findings reveal not only the animosities between Irish and Protestant groups in the mining camp\, but also the complicated ways that the city’s Black and Chinese populations were involved in this explosive rivalry. \nThe Brown Bag presentation will begin at noon on Wednesday\, November 12th\, 2025\, and will last about an hour. SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch: Chinese New Year in Montana - Mark Johnson
DESCRIPTION:“From Montana’s earliest boomtowns and mining camps\, Chinese residents were a visible and vital part of frontier life. Living far from home and facing regular hostility from anti-Chinese groups\, these communities turned to familiar religious and cultural traditions for strength and belonging. This talk explores the history of Chinese New Year celebrations in Montana\, revealing how parades\, feasts\, fireworks\, and ritual gatherings helped Chinese Montanans maintain cultural continuity in an often-unwelcoming place. More than moments of celebration\, Chinese New Year observances became powerful statements of perseverance\, community\, and identity on the Montana frontier.” – Mark Johnson \nThe Brown Bag presentation will begin at noon on Wednesday\, February 25th\, 2026\, and will last about an hour. The presentation will be held in the auditorium at the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives located at 17 W. Quartz Street. Guests are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. Coffee and water will be provided. \nBrown Bag Lunches are held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month. Upcoming lectures will focus on topics of local interest.
