SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch - The APA Riots\, The Capital Fight\, and Black Republicans in Montana in 1894 - Jeff Guay
DESCRIPTION:The American Protective Association was a nation-wide anti-Catholic group that achieved political and social prominence in Butte in the mid-1890s. With a large Irish Catholic population in the city\, APA activities fueled a full-scale riot in the streets of Butte on July 4th\, 1894. As the 2024 Carrie Johnson Fellow\, Jeff Guay spent countless hours in the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives researching the APA riots of 1894. His findings reveal not only the animosities between Irish and Protestant groups in the mining camp\, but also the complicated ways that the city’s Black and Chinese populations were involved in this explosive rivalry. \nThe Brown Bag presentation will begin at noon on Wednesday\, November 12th\, 2025\, and will last about an hour. The presentation will be held in the auditorium at the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives located at 17 W. Quartz Street. Guests are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. Coffee and water will be provided. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase Ryan’s book after the presentation. \nBrown Bag Lunches are held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month. Upcoming lectures will focus on topics of local interest. For more information\, contact the Archives at (406)782-3280.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch: Open AIR Artists-in-Residence
DESCRIPTION:Open AIR’s place-based Artist-in-Residence program connects artists from across disciplines with culturally\, historically\, and ecologically significant locations through partnerships across the state. From remote wilderness to historic communities\, artists engage deeply with place\, environment\, and people. \nThis Fall\, four Open AIR artists are in residence in Butte from September 29 – November 2\, 2025: Olivia Berkey\, Megan Karls\, Aubrey Edwards\, and Laurie Robins. During this special Brown Bag presentation\, each will share their work\, creative process\, and experiences engaging with the Butte community. \nAbout the Artists \nOlivia Berkey – Artist-In-Residence at Hungry Hill \nOlivia Berkey is an artist working in ceramics\, performance\, and choreography. Her dances\, often solo in practice and presentation\, are conceived of as an imagined duet with unseen and sometimes inanimate partners: the dreamt presence of other bodies\, mountains\, rocks\, desert fields\, herself in duplicate. Her ceramic work\, too\, investigates the relationship between body and earth\, human and geologic time. Drawing from her experience working in museum and gallery archives\, she is ever-exploring archiving the ephemeral. She holds a BA in Dance and Art History from Bard College (2020)\, where she received awards for her work in both arts scholarship and performance. Born and raised in North Carolina\, she was first exposed to the region’s rich history of woodfired ceramics at age eighteen. Upon graduation from Bard\, she moved to Taos\, New Mexico\, to apprentice with local woodfire artist Logan Wannamaker. In Taos\, she has remained—digging\, kiln building\, walking\, dancing. She can also be heard hosting a biweekly radio show on KNCE Taos. She has performed at the American Dance Festival (NC) and the National Arts Festival (South Africa) and premiered her choreography at Groundswell Series (NY) and the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts (NY). Her ceramic work has been represented at galleries and art markets around northern New Mexico\, and she was a recent ceramic Artist-in-Residence with Arquetopia Foundation in Puebla\, Mexico. \nAubrey Edwards – Artist-in-Residence at Clark Chateau\nAubrey is a visual artist\, collaborative anthropologist\, educator\, storyteller\, and memory worker with heartstrings tied to New Orleans and presently running wild in Wyoming. Her socially engaged practice spans the academic\, creative\, applied\, and public spheres\, exploring intersections of culture\, history\, and community. She has a deep love for collaborative storytelling practices that unearth buried labor narratives of the west\, celebrating the folks who built the places we call home. She is presently earning her PhD in Public Humanities at the University of Wyoming. \nTess Fahlgren – Artist-in-Residence at Clark Chatteu\nTess Fahlgren is a graduate of the University of Minnesota MFA program. Her work has appeared in Montana Quarterly\, Joyland\, Blue Mesa Review\, and elsewhere. She writes from her rural Montana hometown\, where her nonprofit just donated a skatepark to the city. \nRichard Opper – Artist-in-Residence at Clark Chatteu\nPainting is healing. To observe a scene for its colors\, values\, and shapes is to see things in a new way. It helps strip away the judgements\, preconceived notions\, or biases I may want to project onto it. Painting requires me to see the subject for what it is rather than for what I might expect it to be. In that sense\, it’s a way to get me closer to the truth and to observe more deeply the beauty that surrounds me – beauty I might have otherwise missed. \nHe has been an artist in residence at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (Dublin) and the South London Gallery (London)\, which culminated in a solo exhibition and publication. Other recent presentations of work include Transmediale (DE)\, New Wight Biennial (US)\, Temple Bar Gallery (IE)\, and a radio broadcast on KBMF Butte Montana. \nThe Brown Bag presentation will begin at noon on Wednesday\, October 8th\, 2025\, and will last about an hour. The presentation will be held in the auditorium at the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives\, located at 17 W. Quartz Street. Guests are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. Coffee and water will be provided. \nBrown Bag Lunches are held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month. Upcoming lectures will focus on topics of local interest. SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch - James Ben Ali Haggin: The Checkbook Behind Marcus Daly and The Anaconda Company - Brenda Wahler
DESCRIPTION:The Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives’ Brown Bag Lunch Series welcomes Brenda Wahler to present about James Ben Ali Haggin and his business operations with Marcus Daly. \nJames Ben Ali Haggin allegedly handed Marcus Daly his checkbook with every blank check signed and said\, “draw and keep drawing.”  Haggin’s fortune\, built over 30 years of struggle\, gave him compassion for a young and struggling Daly.  His checkbook funded the Anaconda smelter and kept the company afloat through price wars\, attempts to corner the copper market\, fires\, sabotage and mine disasters.  Haggin and Daly were also bonded closely through their love of racehorses and between them created a turf empire that still influences modern horse racing. \nThe Brown Bag presentation will begin at noon on Wednesday\, September 10th\, 2025\, and will last about an hour. The presentation will be held in the auditorium at the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives located at 17 W. Quartz Street. Guests are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch - Donna L. Erickson - "Rooted at the Edge: Ranching Where the Old West and New West Collide"
DESCRIPTION:Rooted at the Edge paints a portrait of a ranching community in a threatened landscape steeped in history\, conflict\, and beauty. In this narrative nonfiction work\, Donna L. Erickson explores the hilly skirt of ground at the northern boundary of Missoula\, Montana\, separating the town from the wilderness beyond. The North Hills region represents the critical—and often highly personal—issues at play at the edge of many western towns. \nThe urban-rural fringe is both valuable and vulnerable. Across the West rural lifestyles are increasingly compromised by suburbanization\, economic hardship\, and family dynamics; a way of life and a way of work are vanishing. Ranchland may be simultaneously cherished by a family for the life its members have made there and coveted by urban neighbors for open space. Community residents may love a place for its scenery and wildlife habitat while others wish it converted to a commercial parking lot. Complex ecological relationships can be bulldozed in a single afternoon. And the threats of climate change and shifting populations compromise the edge even more. \nIn the tension between love and loss\, Erickson wrote this story of a landscape’s soft contours\, piney ridges\, shady draws\, and grassy slopes\, and its potential disappearance under an expanding city. Rooted at the Edge conveys\, in a way that statistics cannot\, what’s at stake when ranches at the urban fringe are threatened. \nThe presentation will begin at noon at the Archives\, 17 W. Quartz. Guests are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. Coffee and water will be provided. Brown Bag Lunches are held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month. SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch -Jerry Worley - Once Upon a Time in Cut Bank\, Montana: The Last Apex Team
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an uncommon story that took place during a frozen weekend in a faraway rural community – Cut Bank\, Montana. It was November 9th\, 1973\, and the state Class A football championship game between the two-time defending Butte Central Maroons and a new entry to the Class A ranks\, the Cut Bank Wolves. Let’s drift back to a distant time and zoom into both teams’ unique odysseys that led them to their first – and only – football contest. A large contingent of Maroon fans made the trip to the Hi Line to watch a frigid struggle on a cold field. They supported a Central squad that was not only first\, but last. They were the final Butte team to play on the dirt field – and soon-to-be condemned – Naranche Stadium. They were the final Maroon team to defeat their bitter rival\, Butte High. And finally\, they were the last Central team to win a state football championship. This presentation will compare the personality mixture that made up the Butte Central team and fans\, with their worthy foe\, the Northern A champs\, Cut Bank Wolves. We will converge on this 1973 Hi Line community and their unexpected experience (and shenanigans) with the people from the Mining City. Although a sports story\, this presentation will include accounts of Cut Bank and Butte’s non-sports history\, culture\, and human experience. \nThe presentation will begin at noon at the Archives\, 17 W. Quartz. Guests are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. Coffee and water will be provided. Brown Bag Lunches are held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month. For more information\, contact the Archives at (406) 782-3280.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch - Catharine Meline-Moser - When Montana Outraced the East: Reign of Western Thoroughbreds
DESCRIPTION:In Gilded-Age Montana\, three former frontiersmen turned from speculation in minerals to speculation in Thoroughbred horses. The rest is horse racing history…or would be if the story had ever been written. When Montana Outraced the East retrieves the largely forgotten late nineteenth-century golden age of the Montana Thoroughbred industry\, when Montana horses won some of the biggest prizes in American horse racing\, confounding national sportswriters and threatening to reshape the balance of power within America’s oldest sport. This book introduces readers to larger-than-life characters like silver baron Noah Armstrong\, pioneer banker Samuel Larabie\, and “Copper King” Marcus Daly\, each pursuing his passion for horses by studying pedigrees\, importing blue-blooded stock\, and turning them loose on native grasses under Montana’s big sky.\nWhere one observer saw “verist madness” in the enterprise\, another sports journalist foresaw a not-too-distant day when Montana would “rival the worlds of old Yorkshire and the Blue-Grass region of Kentucky in the fame and celebrity of its racehorses.” And indeed\, in due time the Montana horsemen were fielding equine stars like Spokane\, winner of the 1889 Kentucky Derby; Scottish Chieftain\, winner in the 1897 Belmont Stakes; and Ogden\, the “Horse of Mystery” that rocked the eastern racing establishment by taking the 1896 Futurity at prerace odds of 150 to 1. Catharine Melin-Moser recreates the thrilling era when\, through the shrewd foresight\, hustle\, and luck that had made them millionaires\, Montana entrepreneurs made a lasting mark on American horse racing. In telling their story\, her book restores a significant and thoroughly captivating chapter to American Thoroughbred racing history. \nCatharine Melin-Moser is a writer and independent historian. Her Western history articles have appeared in journals and magazines. She writes from her home in the Judith Mountains of central Montana.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch - Desera Towle - Jeanette Kelley - Betty Crocker
DESCRIPTION:The Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives’ Brown Bag Lunch Series welcomes Desera Towle to present about Janette Kelley\, the woman who inspired the creation of Betty Crocker. \nRumors swirl.
