SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch - Donna L. Erickson - "Rooted at the Edge: Ranching Where the Old West and New West Collide"
DESCRIPTION:Rooted at the Edge paints a portrait of a ranching community in a threatened landscape steeped in history\, conflict\, and beauty. In this narrative nonfiction work\, Donna L. Erickson explores the hilly skirt of ground at the northern boundary of Missoula\, Montana\, separating the town from the wilderness beyond. The North Hills region represents the critical—and often highly personal—issues at play at the edge of many western towns. \nThe urban-rural fringe is both valuable and vulnerable. Across the West rural lifestyles are increasingly compromised by suburbanization\, economic hardship\, and family dynamics; a way of life and a way of work are vanishing. Ranchland may be simultaneously cherished by a family for the life its members have made there and coveted by urban neighbors for open space. Community residents may love a place for its scenery and wildlife habitat while others wish it converted to a commercial parking lot. Complex ecological relationships can be bulldozed in a single afternoon. And the threats of climate change and shifting populations compromise the edge even more. \nIn the tension between love and loss\, Erickson wrote this story of a landscape’s soft contours\, piney ridges\, shady draws\, and grassy slopes\, and its potential disappearance under an expanding city. Rooted at the Edge conveys\, in a way that statistics cannot\, what’s at stake when ranches at the urban fringe are threatened. \nThe presentation will begin at noon at the Archives\, 17 W. Quartz. Guests are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. Coffee and water will be provided. Brown Bag Lunches are held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month. For more information\, contact the Archives at (406) 782-3280.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch -Jerry Worley - Once Upon a Time in Cut Bank\, Montana: The Last Apex Team
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an uncommon story that took place during a frozen weekend in a faraway rural community – Cut Bank\, Montana. It was November 9th\, 1973\, and the state Class A football championship game between the two-time defending Butte Central Maroons and a new entry to the Class A ranks\, the Cut Bank Wolves. Let’s drift back to a distant time and zoom into both teams’ unique odysseys that led them to their first – and only – football contest. A large contingent of Maroon fans made the trip to the Hi Line to watch a frigid struggle on a cold field. They supported a Central squad that was not only first\, but last. They were the final Butte team to play on the dirt field – and soon-to-be condemned – Naranche Stadium. They were the final Maroon team to defeat their bitter rival\, Butte High. And finally\, they were the last Central team to win a state football championship. This presentation will compare the personality mixture that made up the Butte Central team and fans\, with their worthy foe\, the Northern A champs\, Cut Bank Wolves. We will converge on this 1973 Hi Line community and their unexpected experience (and shenanigans) with the people from the Mining City. Although a sports story\, this presentation will include accounts of Cut Bank and Butte’s non-sports history\, culture\, and human experience.

DESCRIPTION:In Gilded-Age Montana\, three former frontiersmen turned from speculation in minerals to speculation in Thoroughbred horses. The rest is horse racing history…or would be if the story had ever been written. When Montana Outraced the East retrieves the largely forgotten late nineteenth-century golden age of the Montana Thoroughbred industry\, when Montana horses won some of the biggest prizes in American horse racing\, confounding national sportswriters and threatening to reshape the balance of power within America’s oldest sport. This book introduces readers to larger-than-life characters like silver baron Noah Armstrong\, pioneer banker Samuel Larabie\, and “Copper King” Marcus Daly\, each pursuing his passion for horses by studying pedigrees\, importing blue-blooded stock\, and turning them loose on native grasses under Montana’s big sky.\nWhere one observer saw “verist madness” in the enterprise\, another sports journalist foresaw a not-too-distant day when Montana would “rival the worlds of old Yorkshire and the Blue-Grass region of Kentucky in the fame and celebrity of its racehorses.” And indeed\, in due time the Montana horsemen were fielding equine stars like Spokane\, winner of the 1889 Kentucky Derby; Scottish Chieftain\, winner in the 1897 Belmont Stakes; and Ogden\, the “Horse of Mystery” that rocked the eastern racing establishment by taking the 1896 Futurity at prerace odds of 150 to 1. Catharine Melin-Moser recreates the thrilling era when\, through the shrewd foresight\, hustle\, and luck that had made them millionaires\, Montana entrepreneurs made a lasting mark on American horse racing. In telling their story\, her book restores a significant and thoroughly captivating chapter to American Thoroughbred racing history. \nCatharine Melin-Moser is a writer and independent historian. Her Western history articles have appeared in journals and magazines. She writes from her home in the Judith Mountains of central Montana.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch: Michael Brown - "Mary MacLane Alive: Road to Biography"
DESCRIPTION:The Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives’ Brown Bag Lunch Series welcomes Michael Brown to present about Mary MacLane\, her life\, and what makes her such an interesting historical figure. \n“Since finding her forty years ago\, I’ve advocated for Mary’s work. Now it’s time for her incredible life to be known\, and at this Public Archives Brown Bag virtual event\, I’ll introduce her first-ever biography: Mary MacLane: Herself. Expect 45 minutes packed with surprises – from her ancestry (she was 1/4 indigenous!) through the first account of her father’s adventurous life\, to my rediscovery of Butte’s high school newspapers believed lost\, full of her first writing – which I claim created Surrealism 25 years before Europe did. Every corner of her life\, from what she was like as a baby to her friends in Butte to her six years on the East Coast with her favorite author’s female partner\, to her incredible openness about her sexuality in her 1910 Butte feature articles\, to her ground-breaking silent film in which she starred as herself and for the first time broke the fourth wall – to unknown writing throughout her life\, private letters\, memories of women and men she romantically approached\, and at last a full understanding of her life in the 1920s and what she did in her last months\, days\, even hours – I’ll cover it all\, and most of all what’s intrigued me from the first day: who Mary MacLane really was. There will be a Q&A after and open discussion after that\, and I look forward to engaging with everyone who can make it!” – Michael R. Brown \nThis Brown Bag will be a virtual presentation but will still be shown in the Archives’ auditorium. If you want to watch it at home\, please use this link to access the presentation. \nThe Brown Bag presentation will begin at noon on Wednesday\, January 8th\, 2025\, and last about an hour. SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch - Steve Quane - Virtual Geosites: A New Way to Experience the Geology of Montana
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Geosites: A New Way to Experience the Geology of Montana \n“From the dinosaur-riddled badlands of the east to the structurally tortured mountains of the west\, Montana’s geology spans ~3.5 billion years of earth history. The stunning geodiversity is challenging to encapsulate\, visualize\, and comprehend via traditional means. Certainly\, the best way to experience these places is in person\, however\, due to a myriad of reasons\, we can’t all visit these far-flung places. Here\, I employ 360-degree video to create short\, ~5-minute vignettes to bring stunning Montana Geosites to you. For context\, I will position each Geosites into a larger interpretive geo-narrative for the state. Eventually\, this project will comprise 41 Geosites for the 41st state. I invite you to join me in this adventure. During my non-traditional presentation\, you will immerse yourself in a number of these sites.” – Steve Quane.\nIn order to do so\, please bring your mobile phone\, laptop computer\, or virtual reality headset and a pair of headphones to the presentation. \nThe Brown Bag presentation will begin at noon on Wednesday\, November 27th\, 2024\, and will last about an hour.
