Shortly after midnight on February 28, 1972, an explosion occurred in the J.C. Penney department store on Park Street. The building was engulfed in flames, and the fire quickly spread to 12 other businesses, as well as two empty buildings. Nearly 24 hours after the fire began, firefighters were still putting out occasional spurts of flames. The loss was valued at more than $3 million at the time—more than $18 million today! The source of the explosion was never determined.
