Join us the next few days as we show the creation Join us the next few days as we show the creation of one of Butte's famous gallowsframes! Pictured today is the location for the Kelley Mine shaft in 1948. This site was chosen because "the mining of higher grade ores through the years revealed large areas of lower grade copper-bearing material". The Anaconda Company broke ground on April 17, 1948.

126 years ago today, 58 people lost their lives in 126 years ago today, 58 people lost their lives in a deadly explosion in Butte's warehouse district. A fire started in the Kenyon-Connell Warehouse and spread to a massive amount of dynamite that was illegally stored inside. The explosion killed 13 of the 15 unsuspecting firefighters on the Butte Fire Department. Citizens rushed to the scene. Two more explosions occurred from more illegally stored dynamite in nearby warehouses, ultimately killing 58 people and forever changing the lives of countless others.

"The Christmas spirit, always strong in Butte, is "The Christmas spirit, always strong in Butte, is gaining in vigor with each passing year" the Montana Standard reported in December of 1929. We believe this statement still holds true today as we witness the giving spirit of the Butte community, especially during this past year.

Last week we asked you to share your favorite memo Last week we asked you to share your favorite memories of Santa Claus in Butte. Many of you will remember Earl Casagranda as "Butte's Santa Claus". Earl first started "Santa Claus-ing" in 1971 upon his daughter's request. At the peak of being Santa Claus, Earl would make about 90 visits to the children of Butte each December. Earl did it all out of the goodness of his heart and in the Christmas spirit. Below is a snippet of his oral history the Archives has on file:
.
“Now people call me up and say, ‘I’d like you to Santa Claus. What do you charge?’. I don’t charge. What I do is ask, is if you feel you should reimburse me, I’d like you to make a donation to some other cause. So now I raise money for whatever. My biggest cause is Toys for Tots… I like to go to a party where they’re glad to see Santa Claus. You get a bunch of little kids there that, oh God, that are just so elated that Santa Claus is there! I Santa Claus for everybody. It’s been a great part of my life.”
.
Pictured today is an image from the Montana Standard, December 21, 1984. Earl allows children to pull on his beard to see if he is the real Santa Claus.
