Robert “Evel” Knievel was born and raised in Butte. He would become one of the world’s greatest stunt performers. Known for his extreme motorcycle stunts, such as successfully jumping multiple buses or cars, he is also known for the stunts that he failed, including his attempt to jump ¾ of a mile across the Snake River Canyon in a rocket in 1974. Movies were made based on the extreme life of Knievel. His hometown, Butte, Montana, held “Evel Knievel Days” annually in his honor. Knievel retired from his daredevil career in 1980. He died in 2007 at the age of 69.
