Mary MacLane was born in 1881 in Canada, but grew up in the West Side neighborhood of Butte. In 1902, when she was 19-years-old, MacLane wrote, “The Story of Mary MacLane,” frank memoirs that were quite controversial for the time. Because of this, Mary MacLane was known as the “Wild Woman of Butte.” MacLane would go on to write other books and even work as a silent film actress. She died in Chicago in 1929.
