Documentary Double Feature: Rebel Rossa and Rebel Wife

The Butte Archives Presents a Documentary Double Feature: Rebel Rossa and Rebel Wife
The Butte Archives, in partnership with the Friends of the Butte Archives, the Butte Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Friends of Irish Studies in the West, proudly presents a special documentary double feature of Rebel Rossa and Rebel Wife. This event will take place on April 3, 2025, at 5:30 PM at the Montana Tech Auditorium.
Following the screenings, a Q&A session will be held with the filmmaker and Williams Rossa Cole, great-grandson of Jeremiah and Mary Jane O’Donovan Rossa, providing a unique opportunity to delve deeper into the legacy of these influential Irish figures and their impact on history.
About the Films:
The film Rebel Wife relates the “untold story of poet, organizer, and revolutionary Mary Jane O’Donovan Rossa, a woman whose courage, planning, and determination helped free Ireland.” Williams Cole, great-grandson of Mary Jane and Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa, made the film as a companion to his Rebel Rossa, a 2016 film about the centenary of Rossa’s death and famous 1915 funeral in Glasnevin Cemetery, which played a key role in instigating the Easter Rising of 1916.
About Williams Rossa Cole:
Williams Cole has been producing, directing, editing, and archival producing documentary films for nearly 25 years. He produced Gumbo Coalition with Academy Award winner Barbara Kopple, which premiered on Max in 2023, and just completed directing Rebel Wife, which broadcast on RTE in the summer of 2024. Among his other credits are Sundance premieres Finding Fela and 99%: The Occupy Wall Street Collaborative Film, the HBO film Gun Fight, Giuliani Time, Barney’s Wall, and Rebel Rossa (available on Amazon Prime). Williams earned an MSc at the London School of Economics on a US-UK Fulbright Scholarship and graduated from Columbia University. He was a founding contributing editor of The Brooklyn Rail, a monthly publication on arts and politics. Recently, he completed an AI Strategy Certificate at Cornell and is engaged in the Information Warfare Certificate at the University of Arizona.
